Types of skin aging
- Intrinsic aging – changes which occur due to normal maturity and occurring in all individuals
- Extrinsic aging – changes induced by UV light exposure, smoking, and other environmental pollutants
Histologic changes (with normal aging and photoaging)
- Dermis becomes relatively acellular, avascular, and less dense with the loss of functional elastic tissue.
- Gradual decline in nerves, microcirculation, and sweat glands
- Decline in growth of nails
- SQ fat atrophies on cheeks and distal extremities, but hypertrophies on waist of men and thighs of women
Histologic changes (with normal aging and photoaging)
Size does matter!
- A flat, circumscribed area that is a change in the color of the skin:

> 1 cm dia = patch (irregular)
- An elevated, firm, circumscribed area:
< 1 cm dia = papule
1-2 cm dia = nodule (deeper)
> 2 cm dia = tumor (solid: + demarcation); cyst if filled with liquid or semi-solid material
