* Origin of the patent system/ Historical context * National Patent systems o IP policy, laws and administration o classification of African countries based on status and approach of protection of patents * Membership to international patent treaties-PIPC,PCT, TRIPS * Regional Patent co-operation * Bilateral & Regional Investment and Trade Agreements Contribution of the patent system in Enhancing S&T development
* Local inventive and innovative activities * Protection of inventions and ownership of patents
o Few patent application in and outside Africa o Majority of applicants for and owners of patents in Africa are foreigners o Insignificant share of global granted patents Map of global granted Patents
