We have a National Book Crisis:
* 61% of low income families do not own a single book!
* A typical middle class child enters 1st grade with 1,000 hours of being read to, while the low-income child averages 25 hours!
* By age four, children who live in poor families will have heard
32 million fewer words than children living in professional families!
* 80% of the preschools and after school programs
serving at-risk children have no books!
* The only behavioral measure that correlates significantly
with reading scores is the number of books in the home!
