TELRI- Trans-European Language Resource Initiative
* Funded by the European Union
* To facilitate interchange of resources and cooperation between the Human Language Technology communties in the European Union and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe
* Activities include the running of an annual seminar, supporting research proposals, supporting joint research projects
* TELRI is coming to Birmingham!

TRACTOR Goals
* To acquire and distribute language resources
* To facilitate interchange of resources and cooperation among TELRI partners
* To widen TELRI research community by developing the Tractor User Community (TUC).

Project Outline
* Organise and document existing resources
* Provide means of internet access to resources
* Recruit users
* Go live in January 2000
* Run a helpdesk (helpdesk@tractor.de)
* Provide a directory of members and services
* Run a workshop at the Tuscan Word Centre in May 2000
* Continue to acquire and distribute resources
* Improve documentation and interface.

* Resources in Bulgarian, Czech, Dutch, English, Estonian, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Uzbek.

How does it work?
* Join the TRACTOR User Community
* Download resources from the website
* Contact other members of the community (via the helpdesk)

Standards
* There is a 2-tier structure to the resources:
1. Resources in any format will be accepted and distributed
2. Certain standards will be recommended, and conformant resources can be accessed online
* Standards for documentation are being worked out now.

What is it good for?
* Industrial applications (Lennout & Hauspie, Xerox, Inxight, etc.)
* Academic research
* Parallel corpora and other multilingual resources are crucial to new directions in information retrieval and translation systems, which are becoming increasingly important in a multilingual Europe.
